Full time: Coventry 3-1 Sunderland. Goals from Sakamoto, Awoniyi and Rudoni put the hosts firmly in control before Le Fée's penalty gave Sunderland hope, but Coventry held firm despite the visitors enjoying more possession and a flurry of late pressure. There was further drama deep into stoppage time as Omar Alderete was sent off for a second yellow card, capping a frustrating night for Sunderland as Coventry saw out a deserved victory.

Sunderland have continued to press for a way back in, with Talbi firing over from a corner and O'Nien having a shot blocked, while Coventry's Cherif also saw an effort charged down. There's late drama with a lengthy delay for treatment to Rushworth, but as it stands Coventry look set to see out their 3-1 advantage deep into stoppage time.

Sunderland have pushed for a way back into this since pulling one back, with Brobbey heading over from a Xhaka assist and O'Nien having a shot blocked, while fresh legs from both benches have added energy to the closing stages. Coventry have weathered the pressure well though, with Rudoni seeing an effort blocked as the hosts look to see out their 3-1 lead.

Sunderland pull one back from the spot! Ethan Pinnock's handball gives away a penalty after a VAR review, and Le Fée steps up to tuck it into the top left corner, giving the visitors a lifeline at 3-1.

It's now 3-0 and Coventry are running riot! Rudoni drills a left-footed effort from outside the box into the bottom corner, with Torp setting it up, and Sunderland's defensive troubles continue despite their edge in possession.

Coventry double their lead! Awoniyi finishes well from the centre of the box after a right-footed effort finds the bottom corner, and suddenly the hosts look firmly in control at the break despite Sunderland's earlier dominance of possession.

Against the run of play, Coventry lead! Sakamoto curls a lovely left-footed strike from outside the box into the bottom corner to put the hosts in front, despite Sunderland having had the better of the early chances.

Sunderland have edged this opening spell, enjoying a bit more of the ball and forcing the better chance when Rigg tested Rushworth from outside the box, well saved low to the middle. Coventry have had their moments too, with Mfuni heading just wide from a Rudoni set-piece delivery and Awoniyi flagged offside, but Torp's early booking for a poor foul has them playing with a touch of caution. It's finely balanced on the stats but Sunderland look the slightly sharper side right now.
