Sunderland v Brentford live: score, updates and line-ups

Deep into stoppage time and Brentford have given themselves a lifeline - Thiago heads home Jensen's cross to make it 3-2, setting up a nervy finish for Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Brentford have continued to push hard for a way back into this, with Damsgaard and Thiago both seeing efforts blocked in a flurry of late pressure, while Rigg went close at the other end with a shot that just missed the target. Tempers have frayed a little too, with Janelt and Schuster both picking up yellow cards as the fouls mount up, but Sunderland's defence is still standing firm to protect their 3-1 lead heading into the closing stages.

Brentford have continued to make changes, with Schade and Ajer the latest arrivals, and they've picked up another corner to edge further ahead on that count. A quieter start to the second half compared to the goal-laden opening 45. Sunderland made an early change, bringing on Rigg for Diarra, and the only action since the restart has been a couple of fouls - Danso for Sunderland and Thiago for Brentford. The stats remain almost identical to half-time, with Brentford still holding the edge in possession and shots but Sunderland clinging to their 3-1 lead.

A thrilling first half ends 3-1 to Sunderland, who were ruthless on the counter with goals from Talbi, Tutierov and Fofana despite Brentford dominating possession and shots overall. Wilson's close-range finish gave the visitors hope right on the stroke of half-time, and Brentford will feel there's plenty more to come after also edging the corner count 3-0.

Brentford pull one back before the break - Callum Wilson turns home Janelt's assist from close range to make it 3-1. The visitors keep pushing, almost adding a second moments later when Wilson's follow-up effort was saved, as Sunderland head into the interval with a two-goal cushion built on a ruthless counter-attacking spell.

Sunderland's clinical streak continues and Fofana's header has them 3-0 up, with Ta Bi once again the provider. Brentford still have more of the ball but just can't turn their possession into a breakthrough as half-time nears.

Sunderland have turned the game on its head and now Fofana has made it three, nodding home from the left of the six-yard box in the 39th minute. Brentford still edge the possession and corner counts but their fouls have piled up as Sunderland's pace on the counter continues to cause problems, with the home side clinically taking their chances while the visitors are yet to find a way through.

Sunderland are flying now - just three minutes after Talbi's opener, Tutierov doubles the lead with a composed finish from the centre of the box, set up by Ta Bi. Brentford had dominated the ball but find themselves 2-0 down against the run of play.

Brentford have taken control over the last ten minutes, dominating possession and forcing Sunderland back. Igor Thiago went close with a shot that drifted just wide after being teed up by Diouf, and Kayode also had an effort blocked from inside the box. Sunderland have been restricted to winning free kicks in their own half, with Ellborg yet to be seriously tested, as the visitors push for the opening goal.
